Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

Development

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a  catechetical program for children in which every element is designed to be particularly suited to the developmental stage of the young child’s interior life.  Children’s developmental stages each last 3 years, hence CGS is divided into ages 3-6,  6-9, and 9-12.

Spiritual Formation

A foundational principle of  CGS is that children possess a rich interior life through the indwelling of the Trinity and are guided personally by the Holy Ghost to build a deep spiritual life.  Also, the  younger the child, the more their spiritual life differs from that of the adult.

Prepared Environment

The catechist serves the young child’s unique approach to God by providing an environment (the Atrium) with materials appropriate to the child’s developmental stage.  The CGS guide also cooperates with the work of the Holy Ghost by observing each child and guiding them to the materials that match their current interior thirst for God.  

In the meditative environment of the CGS Atrium, the 3-6 year old child will absorb very deeply various aspects of the liturgy, Scripture, and the Sacraments and truly interiorize the knowledge he gains in the  context of his love for Our Lord, taking great joy in his Faith.

Moral Foundation

On this foundation, in the next stage the 6-9 year old child will build a moral life in which he does good out of his love of God primarily and out of a sense of duty only secondarily, in the spirit of all the saints.

Responsibility

The 9-12 year old child becomes aware of his personal responsibility to contribute in God’s service and begins to discern God’s call on His life.  The 6-12 year olds will also continue to deepen the meditation on the Mass, Scripture, and the Sacraments that begins in Level 1, while adding the historical dimension of the history of the kingdom of God and God’s plan of salvation.  

Love & Prayer

Through their joy, their wonder and awe, their capacity for love and prayer, and their radical simplicity, the children offer adults a glimpse into what it means to fall in love with God.
